'Ogni cosa rappresa'2018
Giulio Saverio Rossi
At CAR DRDE, Bologna
The project conceived for CAR DRDE gallery develops from the chalk of Bologna. A mineral that combines visual art, history and landscape.
The commodification of this material and the building of the city have been strictly connected, as well in the shaped of the surrounding landscape (full of chalk mines) and in its employed in the painting, because the powder of chalk, a product obtained from the mineral gesso or selenite, is the basis for priming in oil painting technique.
Starting from a selenite crystal, extracted in the '60s from Vena del gesso Romagnola, the exhibited works are articulated on various possible declinations to show and deny the presence of chalk, placing at the center of the narrative path the reflection on the relationship between image and subject represented, that the chemical transformation from selenite to gypsum powder. Gypsum is therefore the invisible subject on which the painted image stands, the intermediate and necessary layer between colors and canvas.
Ogni cosa rappresa, etymological meaning of the word crystal, is thus referred both to the subject of the works presented in the exhibition and to the painting as such, which by investigating itself tries to grow and crystallize
